9I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. (1 Timothy 2:9, 10)
Elaborate hairstyles makes me think of the ‘80s where women wore their hair “big” (no offense if this was something that you did). My interpretation of Paul’s instruction to women above is that by wearing elaborate hairstyles, expensive jewelry and indecent clothing we are bringing attention to ourselves and not to Jesus where the focus of others should be. We want to represent Jesus in all ways possible, and we can’t do that if we are drawing attention to our bodies. I was definitely guilty of this in my younger days. Now that I’m older, I know better, so to speak. Not only that, but I have a nine-year-old daughter who watches my every move and learns from my behaviors (the good and the bad). We all want to look our best and I don’t feel there’s anything wrong with that, but we must do it modestly. I don’t mean that we should dress like Nuns, but we should keep our private parts, well, private.
