CSR Daily Devotion

I wish y’all a blessed Tuesday! I hope you do not mind, but this week I’m going to be focusing solely on music in my commentary section. And specifically, the debut full length album, Holy Water, from Christian Music’s hottest new band: We The Kingdom. Following the album set, this is song #2: Waking Up. I love the background electronics that subtly sounds like an alarm clock’s rhythmic pulse. This is my new track to get my day started, and I think you’ll see it’s a great song to start your morning routine to! So yesterday we learned to break out of our cage and be known in Christ, today we are called to “wake up,” and “cross the Jordan” and be ALIVE!

August 11

16Rejoice always, 17pray continually, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

19Do not quench the Spirit.  20Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22reject every kind of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-22)

When the Biblical Scholars broke Paul’s letter down into “verses” they decided to make these three closing sentences into a seven verse bonanza of short, powerful prose and advice.  To break these verses down in a nice numerical list:

  1. Rejoice always
  2. Pray continually
  3. Give thanks in all circumstances
  4. Do not (ignore or water down) the Spirit
  5. Do not be contempt with the prophecies of the Bible
  6. Hold on to what is good
  7. Reject every kind of evil

Most of these are pretty straightforward and easy to understand and even put into action.  Except for number four.  What does it mean to not “quench” the Spirit?

For me, the way I can explain this is that when you feel the Spirit move you, stir your soul, make your heart flutter to do an act of good, you do just that.  You listen and act on what the spirit beckons of you.  The more you do this, the more it will become second nature to you and the Spirit will live through you, in you, and permeate to all those around you.
