We are not responsible for the sins of our forefathers, but we are responsible to mourn and undo their damage as best we can. This is basic Christianity. (Dr. Gray, Derwin, “How To Heal Our Racial Divide”, pg 202)
Day 171 of Russia’s war with Ukraine. Day 71 of America’s deadly summer (I started this count from June 1). Click on either count for an update to the wars that are gripping this world: the war in Eastern Europe and the war within our own streets. I hate to start each post with such gloomy facts, but until there is no peace in the streets, or peace in the East, I’m going to keep those topics at our forefront. Russia suffered a heavy blow yesterday as an air base in Crimea fell under attack by Ukranian forces.
Dr. Derwin Gray mentions “basic Christianity” in the lines above, suggesting that it should be common practice for all Christians to mourn the mistakes America has made in the past. From slaughtering Native Americans, to owning slaves, to killing to protect the sin of slavery, to the continual racism that is still present in certain pockets of our society, our forefathers have had some serious missteps in the growth of America. It is basic Christianity that as a Christian, you should love all races, all religions, all genders, all creatures, and all of creation. And it is our job to protect all of it. What are you going to do today to demonstrate your Christ-like love to God and to all people? What can you do to help the glory of God bloom all around you? As a Christian, you have access to the same Holy Spirit that allowed Jesus to heal hundreds, feed thousands, calm storms, walk on water, and resurrected the dead. Tap into that eternal power and help grow the Church.
