Happy Wednesday friends! Halfway through the work week and almost halfway through October already! I hope you have learned a lot this fall. To give you some extra schooling, here is Pastor Steven Furtick‘s word from last weekend.
And our Song-of-the-Day is the newest, banging beats from Ms. Beckah Shae: “Awake.” I just discovered this song on YouTube this morning and I love it!
9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. (James 3:9-12)
Mrs. Z loves verses like this because she points out how I need to clean up my language sometimes. But when Paul refers to cursing here, he is not speaking of actual curse words. Here cursing means any negative words we speak about others. Look at American culture in 2020, look at our supposed leaders who claim to be “Christian” yet every other word out of their mouth is slander against others. Mrs. Z has spoken out about this often in her devotions, and now it is my turn. Let’s stop wasting our breath speaking negatively about others. Let us focus on the good, and for the bad, let’s offer words to help lift up and eliminate such behavior. No one likes to be scolded, not many people take criticism well. The world needs positive reinforcement, which means using kind words and affirming interactions to instruct correct behavior. It’s not always easy, if it was, then everyone would be doing it. But the more you work speaking only praise into your day-to-day routine, the easier it gets. To the point that one day, it will just become your way of life. And then you will see how amazing living a life in Christ can be.
