Today I want to share a very unique song. It’s from the husband and wife duo called The Gray Havens. Their described as Christian folk and have been around for a few years, launching their first album in 2015 using funds from a Kickstarter campaign. I first noticed them with the release of “Rest,” which I love. My wife and I have really enjoyed “Sunday Train” this last weekend, which is why I am sharing it below.
1And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12:1-3)
I hope your Bible looks like mine when you finish reading Hebrews chapter 12 today. From these first three verses to the end, I have almost every paragraph highlighted, verse after verse underlined and astericked. There’s a lot of great context in this short chapter. It was hard to pick just one paragraph for us to look at today, but I love the words above: let us run with perseverance, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Jesus is the pioneer and perfecter of faith. That’s a pretty incredible title, as you saw over the last two days of Hebrews 11 where every example of great Hebrew figures demonstrated their faith in God and followed His commands. But here is Jesus, demonstrating a faith unlike the world had ever seen as he endured the cross and death, in full faith that God would do just as He had said He would, resurrect the Son and secure Jesus’ eternal place at the right side of God. Keep your faith, be a pioneer in your believing, perfect your worship.
