Silent (Holy) Saturday 2026
62The next day, on the Sabbath, the leading priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate. 63They told him, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver once said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise from the dead.’ 64So we request that you seal the tomb until the third day. This will prevent his disciples from coming and stealing his body and then telling everyone he was raised from the dead! If that happens, we’ll be worse off than we were at first.” 65Pilate replied, “Take guards and secure it the best you can.” 66So they sealed the tomb and posted guards to protect it. (Matthew 26:62-66)
1Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body. (Mark 16:1)
Five verses are all that exist through the four Gospels that mention anything about what is called by some as “Silent Saturday”, or Holy Saturday. This marks the day between Good Friday, where Jesus is crucified on Golgotha Hill, and Resurrection Sunday, when the tomb is empty and death has been defeated. Saturday is called silent because the Disciples are silent. They are all in hiding. Despite Jesus telling them exactly what would happen, they are still filled with doubt. Peter, who had been the only one to declare Jesus the Messiah, the only one to walk with Him on the surface of the Sea of Galilee, the one Jesus told would build His church, that same Peter had denied even knowing Jesus during His arrest and trial early Friday morning. Only John, Jesus’ beloved Disciple, had been at the foot of the cross as Jesus proclaimed, “It is finished”. It was finished. His torture. His physical pain. His sacrifice in a mortal body. But the mission of Jesus Christ was just beginning on the cross.
Jesus released His spirit from His mortal body on the cross and descended into hell. The Apostles’ Creed, (an early Christian statement of faith, or creed, dating back to the second century, summarizing core beliefs regarding God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit) captures the ‘Harrowing of Hell‘ in four simple words: he descended into hell. Paul and Peter wrote about this in their letters. Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:9: Notice that it says “he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world. Peter writes in his first letter (1 Peter 3:19): So (Jesus) went and preached to the spirits in prison. Traditional interpretations of this verse are that this refers to Saturday, between Jesus’ death and resurrection, when Christ announced salvation to God’s faithful followers who had been waiting for their salvation during the whole Old Testament era (Life Application Study Bible page 2186, footnote 3:18-20). Peter also wrote a few verses later in verse 4:6: That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead-so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit (1 Peter 4:6). Peter writes this after sitting with Jesus after the Resurrection, learning the truth of what the Son of God had accomplished on this Silent, Sacred Saturday. Jesus performed a solo rescue mission deep into enemy territory to rescue God’s righteous followers who had died before they ever had a chance to follow Jesus in the flesh. It is with this knowledge that Peter built the Christian church. It was with this conviction that Peter converted Saul to Paul. It was with this truth that Christianity spread around the entire world.
Jesus is still performing rescue missions for His righteous followers. He still seeks out His faithful followers, the ones who follow His spoken words from the Gospels. The ones doing the work Jesus, the Son of God, commanded: to help the least of us, to give everything to help the poor, to offer healing to the sick, to preach the Good News to the ends of the Earth, to be makers of peace, those that love their enemies, those that seek to protect God’s creation.
As you celebrate Resurrection Sunday this weekend, I ask that you take an honest evaluation of your life. If you are not living the way Jesus commanded you to live (examples listed above) and loving God with all your mind, heart, soul, and might, and loving all people the same, if Jesus were to come back today on His final rescue mission, would your soul be one He is coming to save?
I had been trying to sit down and put a post together all week, but the distractions of this world defeated me every day since Palm Sunday. I failed you all until this moment. I had some moments of breakthrough. I held a Bible Study in my civilian job where we looked at the events of Holy Week on ‘Spy Wednesday’. We broke bread and drank juice in observation of Communion and the Last Supper. And then on Thursday night, my family and I did the same around our dinner table. The wonderful Mrs. Z has put on my heart the importance of making my most important ministry being the one inside my home, so moving forward, that is my focus: to teach my children the truth of the Gospel, to write on their hearts the spoken words of Jesus Christ, my LORD and my GOD.
Part of the reason I wanted to write a post for y’all early in the week was to share the anointed new piece of musical art from Tommee Profitt. Last Friday, Profitt released his long-anticipated sequel to THE BIRTH OF A KING, which after three years remains my favorite ‘Christmas Album’. Now, Profitt has created a ‘Resurrection’ Soundtrack with THE RESURRECTION OF A KING, an epic collection of classic hymns reimagined as only Profitt can. With a full orchestra, choir, and some of the most powerful vocals in Christian music, this album will be the epitome of Resurrection celebrations for years to come. I implore you to listen to the full album by clicking the link above. I wanted to share my favorite track from that set below. If CeCe Winans’ powerful voice singing Jesus Paid It All does not give you chills, you might want to check your pulse. Click the play button, turn up your volume, and rejoice because Jesus paid it all, and because of that, all to Him, we owe.
