King of Kings
7For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:7)
It is Super Bowl Sunday. The biggest sporting event in American Culture. Tonight millions of people will be tuning in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs attempt a back-to-back championship against the San Francisco 49ers. There have been plenty of memes about how we are suddenly back in 2020, the last two times these teams played in the Super Bowl. The same poor choices for the American Presidency are running against each other once again. All we need is another global pandemic to kick off to truly give us that 2020 feeling all over again.
I had gone through a time when I was really against professional sports and the distraction they create. I have been outspoken about that on this platform for a few years now. I have written about the wealth disparity between professional sport players and every other career that should be paid much more. I read last week about the outrageous prices of the tickets for the Super Bowl. But there are still people with the ability to pay those exorbitant price tags, so who am I to judge what they do with their money. God has that covered.
I have seen recently that a handful of professional athletes have been using their platform to glorify God and praise Jesus. And for that, I tip my hat to those brave few who truly know where their power and gifts come from. Patrick Mahomes, for example, has given millions of dollars to local charities in Kansas City and is a true servant leader to his community and the underprivileged in the area. This has opened my eyes to the potential of a Christ-centered professional athlete and the amount of light they can shed in the world. And because of that, I can not help but embrace the good a night like tonight can be to grow the faith.
So for all those watching the Big Game, especially for those having social gatherings to celebrate America’s favorite past time, I pray you have a chance to gently point others to the greatest champion of all time, the King of Kings, our forever Savior, Jesus Christ. Use this opportunity to magnify the love of Jesus, and enjoy the game!
Amen brother! Thank you Jesus!!
