Common Sense REBORN Devotion

 December 30

The principle runs through all life from top to bottom.  Give up yourself, and you will find your real self.  Lose your life and you will save it.  Submit to death, death of your ambitions and favourite wishes every day and death of your whole body in the end:  submit with every fiber of your being, and you will find eternal life.  Keep back nothing.  Nothing that you have not given away will be really yours.  Nothing in you that has not died will ever be raised from the dead.  Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay.  But look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.  (C.S. Lewis, “Mere Christianity” pg. 226-227)

Good evening friends.  The words above come from the very end of C.S. Lewis’ masterpiece “Mere Christianity”.  I wanted to share it today, and look at it again tomorrow, because C.S. Lewis closes his argument over the simplicity and necessity of Christianity with those brilliant words:  “Give up yourself, and you will find your real self”.

We read some amazing works this year.  Three books from the amazing Dr. Derwin Gray (“The Good Life”, “God Do You Hear Me?”, and “How to Heal Our Racial Divide”), Mandy Smith’sUnfettered”, and finally, the classic mentioned above.  I hope you enjoyed all that I shared with y’all on here.  For 2023, we are returning to the basics and some new reading, which I will discuss after the new year.

For today, I want to get back to all the amazing new music from this year.  While yesterday I touched on a handful of debut albums from emerging artists, 2022 also was a year when heavy hitters in Christian Music dropped new works of art.  Passion put out an amazing collection after their annual conference.  Christian Music’s biggest names had new releases including: Zach Williams, MercyMe, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Cody Carnes, Influence Music, Lecrae, Matt Maher, and the sophomore album from We The Kingdom.  From those last two artists come a two-way tie for my second place single.  This song from Mr. Maher is another example of his amazing storytelling and musical masterpiece, called “The Stories I Tell Myself”.

Finally, this song from We The Kingdom was one of my most played tracks of the year.  It is a beautiful melody that will be a popular song for weddings for years to come.  “Count the Stars” is a beautiful reminder of the love God has for us.
