But with the biggest, most peaceful smile-despite a broken leg and ruptured ankle ligaments-my eighteen-year-old son was praising God for his goodness. (Gray, Derwin, “God, Do You Hear Me?” pg 81)
Many Blessings to you on this Monday afternoon family. Dr. Derwin Gray opens Chapter 6 of “God, Do You Hear Me?” with a humbling and beautiful story about his son in his senior year of high school football. Dr. Gray’s son had helped his high school football team win the state championship his junior year, now in his last year of HS ball, he was back in the title game again. And during the game, he suffered a horrific injury: his leg being broken, several ankle ligaments ruptured. But Dr. Gray tells the story as he found his son praising the goodness of God in the midst of all that pain.
That’s the proof you have raised your child to know the true value of themselves and their Heavenly Father. I remember how state competitions were everything in a high school athlete’s world, and I know at 18, I would have not been praising God if I had an injury that removed me from that final moment of competition. I like to believe that 40-year-old me will be able to praise God if injuries bench me in life, but that has taken me the last 22 years to learn and embody.
This week we are finishing Dr. Gray’s focus on who YHWH, Abba, God, our Heavenly Father, is and what we are truly saying when we pray, “Our Father, who is in Heaven, hallowed be Your name.” Chapter 6, “Our Father is Good” reminds us that God is good.
Despite all the evil in the world. Despite all the death from COVID. Despite all the fear from economic instability. Despite the constant threat of war from foolish actors around the world. Despite the disgusting acts of violence flaring up around our country. Despite all the hate and cruelty Americans show their neighbors everyday. Of all that I listed above, the only aspect of these troubles that did not come from mankind’s own idiocracy was COVID, and as you all know, that, too, may have been something mankind created.
God is good and He always works life and destiny out for the good of those WHO LOVE Him and follow His purposes for them in their life. And those purposes are to Love God, and Love People.
If all the horrific news that is constantly put in our faces by the media is leaving you anxious, I implore you to turn off the news, and put on some worship music. I can not say for sure that is exactly what helps me through all the anxiety I probably should be feeling every day, but the music I listen to, raise my hands to, sing out to the Lord to, truly, truly strengthens my soul and invites the Spirit to dwell in me every single day. Turn up the song below, sing along to this new anthem from Sovereign Grace Music, and I pray the words and melodies of this song brings the same peace that passes understanding to you as it does for me.
