October 2
9Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10But the rich should take pride in their humiliation-since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. (James 1:9-11)
James wastes no time going after the rich. Here he points out how believers hold a “high position” just for believing in God and Jesus, a position that holds more value than any material position or wealth in this world.
That truth is still absolute today. Believers, and those who live righteous lives will receive their eternal reward. We have to break the hold money has on this culture. Instead of throwing our money away into bigger, shinier, nosier, newer distractions, let us put our money into making life a better place for all mankind. We have forgotten that there is a whole planet of people suffering because we are so caught up in our own agendas. Let’s humbly march toward a culture that cares not about things that will just fade away and rust, but instead cares about the least of us and loves those suffering as we love ourselves.
