Yesterday’s New Music Friday Christian was a short list of singles, a few EPs and short albums, the majority were slow songs, and only a few stood out to me, unfortunately. The new duo Lion & Bear released a short 4 track EP, which was highlighted by the track below, Lighthouse.

17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.  18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.  (Hebrews 2:17-18)

There are many references in the Book of Hebrews where the author mentions Jesus being a faithful high priest.  The high priest in the Hebrew religion was the only one able to enter the Holy of Holies, the inner chamber where the Ark of the Covenant rested with Moses stone tablets, the gold jar of manna, and Aaron’s staff.  Only the high priest could speak to God.  Here the author of Hebrews begins their argument that Jesus is the high priest, and we will look at specifically what line of high priests they claim Jesus ascended from in a few days.  But today, we look at how Jesus was the “merciful and faithful high priest” who came down among the people and lived with them.  Before Jesus, the high priest came from a line of Levites and was probably groomed for the job.  Not many high priests lived among the people like Jesus did, and rarely were many tempted like Jesus.  But because Jesus was tempted, he understands our sins and our nature to give into temptation.  Instead of holding it against us, this high priest constantly forgives us for our shortcomings, as long as we come to Him and lay our sins at His feet.
