Today, in honor of the verses we will look at in our Daily Devotion, I am sharing the timeless, powerful, world-renowned vocals of the great legendary Aretha Franklin, who released a new single last week. I think it is a great intro for the next couple days as we look on current events and prepare to move into the second half of 2020.
34Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. (1 Corinthians 14:34-35)
I find it weird that whenever I go to stores like “At Home” and look through all their decorative Bible verse wall art, I can never find a wood piece with the verses above to decorate my home with. Probably because if I did, I would find it broken over my head by either my wife or my daughter. I hope that when you read this last week, it, at the very least, caused you to raise an eyebrow. I know I had to reread it the first time I discovered it. I was astounded Paul wrote this. I was even more astounded it was kept in the final edit of the Bible. I mean, this goes against everything Jesus stood for. Never once did Jesus silence the women in His life. He may have not shown His mother the respect He could have, but He did lift up the many women He ran into during His ministry. Mary Magdalene and her sister Martha, the Samaritan woman at the well, and the widows and sick women Jesus constantly healed. Of course, Paul, as I have stated before, did not have the Gospels to read and study. And, unfortunately, Paul had an age old male chauvinistic thought here. And as cringe-worthy as the verses above are, when I read them I felt an absolute freedom. With Paul writing something so falsely out-dated and wrong as the verses above, it means this absolute truth: even someone as wise as Paul can get it wrong sometimes. And if that is true, then what else did Paul and these prophets get wrong? Maybe a little? Maybe a lot? Maybe God and Jesus are a lot more progressive than we like to believe? Maybe Jesus is still talking to people today? Maybe there are still prophets in our world? Maybe we need to stop putting labels on people, whether women, men, homosexual, transgender, whatever they want to be, as long as they love God and love people and treat others with love and respect, who cares?! Jesus commanded us to do two things: love God and love others as ourselves. That’s the goal, that’s the focus.
