April 15

16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but save the world through him… 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.(John 3:16-21)

This passage begins with the most famous line of scripture in the entire Holy Bible, John 3:16, “for God so loved the world” that He sent Jesus, so that whoever believes in Him “shall not perish but have eternal life.”  I have always been surprised by the fact that the world loves John 3:16, but they stop right after that verse.  For me, it’s John 3:17 that speaks volumes: “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but save the world through Him.”  So as I mentioned yesterday, when it’s easy to look at the pandemic of COVID-19 and think that maybe this is God exercising His power to punish us for how far we have strayed from following Jesus, that’s not who God is.  As we see in these passages, God sent Jesus to save the world, not judge and punish the world. Read the entire passage, the beauty of these verses just begins with 3:16. Look at 3:19: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”  Despite how evil our deeds still are, light still exists in the darkness of this world, and as we learned on the first of this month, the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not, and will NEVER overcome it.
