21He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? 22For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.” (Mark 4:21-23)
Jesus uses this parable to teach us that as a light to the world, we cannot be hidden under a bowl. When you are walking with Christ, you have to use your light to drive out the darkness of this wretched world. Today is our second “Serve Day” in February. As I have stated earlier in this devotion, this was written for the “typical” Monday-Friday work week. But not many of us have “typical” schedules any more. I, myself, do not have a typical schedule. And most of us might not have two days off of work a week. Or we are in a position that we have to work a second job on those days off. Trust me, I get it. This might not be your year to engage in the “serving” act every week. The purpose of this devotional is to (hopefully) motivate you to making serving others a priority for 2020. And if this isn’t the year for you to commit to that, then I hope this devotional lights a spark in you that will never stop burning, and you will use this year to prepare yourself to be able to start serving others in the future. Life is about community and Christianity is about reaching out and lifting up that community every chance we get.
Of course, if you do have a nice, structured work week, with two days off, then I hope you have been getting out and serving in your community. Be the lamp on the top of the hill. Do not be a lamp hidden under concealment. Share your love for Jesus, life, and God to the world around you. Let everyone see how walking with Jesus just makes sense!
