Common Sense Reborn Daily Devotional Preview

January 7

9”Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?  11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!  12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”(Matthew 7:9-12)

By now, if you are keeping up with the reading plan, you have finished Matthew 7, thus finishing the three chapter “Sermon on the Mount.”  Again, to re-emphasize the importance of this sermon, this was the only full preaching session recorded from Jesus.  Every sentence is quotable; every verse throws out infinite wisdom and advice.  It’s hard to pick which verse to highlight for the day, and I will be following today with a few more verses from the end of this chapter.  While all the Gospels are different, Matthew is the only author that goes into this amount of depth and detail into this famous sermon.  So it’s extremely important that we get the message Jesus is telling His audience that day, and the message the words are meant to convey to all those who have read them in the last two millennia.  This passage gives the example of a good parent who would give a child food to eat when the child asks.  I hope that you had this type of parent as a child, or if you are a parent, you are the type of parent that provides to your child when they are in need.  Jesus uses food as an example because it shows that the child is not asking for “wants” but rather things of “need.”  Rightly so, our Heavenly Father always provides us with what we “need.”  It surely is not always what we want, but there is a simple explanation of that at the end of this passage.  While I have seen verse 11 quoted many times, I do not see verse 12 quoted nearly as much.  “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.”  The golden rule.  Jesus lived it.  Jesus preached it.  It’s time we start living up to the same standard.
