Hebrews, Part 4
16So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. (Hebrews 4:16)
In Chapter 4 of the Book of Hebrews, the author writes about “God’s promise of entering His rest” (Hebrews 4:1). Rest is a fleeting act that we as Americans barely seek or barely have time for. Sometimes, it is no fault of our own. We have demanding careers, demanding kids, demanding lives. But sometimes, our ability to rest is our own fault. We fill our time with too many distractions that we lose those opportunities to rest. But what does it mean to enter into God’s “rest”?
God’s rest is the peace that comes knowing that God is in control. We need not worry about our lives and how we will get by, because God will provide. As the closing verse for the chapter states above, we, as followers of Christ, can come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. At the foot of the throne, we can lay all our fears and worries, and just rest, knowing that God will take care of all our needs, when we need it most. My family and I have been in a season of that these last few years in our finances. Ever since Mrs. Z left her job to stay home with baby SGZ3, our financial position has been one of just getting by. And every time it seemed like we were asking ourselves how we would pay our bills, God provided a way. I have endless overtime opportunity available with Savannah PD right now due to how short the department is, so I could easily work every single day, and we would be much better off financially. And there have been many months I have done just that. But at the start of this year, I took a step back and stopped trying to do everything myself. Working that much takes away my time from everything that is important: God, my family, growing in the Spirit, and the ability to rest. As soon as I stopped trying to provide all our financial needs myself, God stepped in and has allowed me to rest, allowed me to focus on Him, allowed me to focus on my family. One of the most rewarding parts of resting in God is spending more time in the Word. Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word as this: “For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our inner-most thoughts and desires.” The Word of God is alive and so, so powerful. I cherish every opportunity I get to sit down on this platform and share it with you. Find a way to build a routine where you are reading the Word daily and experience that endless grace in your life.
Come boldly to the throne of the gracious God we serve. He will give you rest. He will give you the mercy you seek and provide all your needs. Come into the Presence of the Lord and find rest.
