Hebrews, Part 2
3So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the LORD Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard Him speak. 4And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever He chose. (Hebrews 2:3-4)
The author of Hebrews, after spending the entire first chapter arguing their point that “the SON” is greater than any angel in Heaven, finally drops the name of Jesus at the opening of chapter two. The author writes to the early Hebrew Christians that they cannot escape the truth of who Jesus is. And it is, honestly, shocking that these Hebrews, who were wise enough to believe in Jesus and the hope and salvation only offered through Him, these initial converts would be considering abandoning their Christianity to fall back into the Jewish trap of waiting for a Messiah that would never come. The Messiah the Jewish faith has waited for since the destruction of the first Temple had come to Earth, performed countless miracles, preached a message of peace and love, and defeated death on the grave. Many of these initial converts had witnessed these things with their own eyes, but as the Christian church faced the greatest persecution in its history, some Hebrews were already looking for a way out.
Now, nearly two thousand years after Jesus’ crucifixion, Christianity has spread around the world. However, while Christians no longer ignore the Divinity of Christ, most Christians ignore the message Jesus preached. Instead of standing for the foreigner, the poor, the widow, and the orphan, many Christians lift up a beast who attacks all of these marginalized people. Many Christians support the horrific campaign by Israel to murder innocent Palestinians, women and children who are God’s special creation, just like the women and children of the nation of Israel. If you claim the Christian faith, you cannot ignore the horrific hypocrisy that is saturating our world right now. And you will surely not be able to escape the judgment that will come upon you for what you stand for in this moment in history. The Good Shepherd is coming back soon, and He will be separating the sheep from the goats. The sheep are those who followed Jesus’ word as a faithful flock. The goats are those who state they follow Jesus but live their lives according to their own desires, jumping from one rocky soil to the next. Are you following Jesus to green pastures? Or are you chasing weeds along treacherous cliffs? The choice is yours to make, and the wonderful thing about God is, He gives you the freewill to make that choice each and every day.
