Common Sense REBORN Devotion

What happened to being fair-minded and just?

3This is what the LORD says: Be fair-minded and just. Do what is right! Help those who have been robbed; rescue them from their oppressors. Quit your evil deeds! Do not mistreat foreigners, orphans, and widows. Stop murdering the innocent! (Jeremiah 22:3)

Here we again see Jeremiah record God telling the people of Judah how they can save themselves from their impeding destruction at the hands of the Babylonians. God tells them to be “fair-minded and just.” To “do what is right!” And again, presses the importance of not mistreating “foreigners, orphans, and widows”. While I wrote on the treatment of those three marginalized groups a few posts ago, today I want to touch on being “fair-minded and just”, and what that means as a Christian.

Fair-minded means treating EVERYONE the same, with being “just” part of the definition of that term. So how do you treat people justly? The definition of “just” is “based on or behaving according to what is morally right and fair”. So, what is morally right? And what is fair?

Is attacking those that are different than you morally right? Is sweeping every illegal immigrant up and sending them back to their country fair? Is shutting the agency down that gives aid to thousands of desperate people around the world being fair-minded?

While I have continued to watch my daily dose of late-night talk hosts every morning to keep my sanity, the humor of the evils that our unfolding in America right now are quickly losing their comedic edge. What is truly disturbing is the number of so-called Christians that support the actions that have unfolded in the last two weeks.

Every day, the news just turns my stomach. From reading reports of the future of the Department of Education to the flip-flopping of this stupid trade war (I thought tariffs were about bringing in revenue, now they are a tool to combat the influx of illegal aliens and fentanyl… on both borders-which is not a thing on the Canadian border). Nothing that has come out of the first two weeks of our current administration is fair-minded or just. I truly hope that the return of Jesus is on the horizon. In the meantime, I will stay focused on what is wonderful, what is holy, what is hopefully returning very, very soon.
