89 Seconds to Midnight
17Pack your bags and prepare to leave; the siege is about to begin. 18For this is what the LORD says: “Suddenly, I will fling out all you who live in this land. I will pour great troubles upon you, and at last you will feel my anger.” (Jeremiah 10:17-18)
Where to begin? America has entered a dark age. This is no “golden age”, it is an era of shock and shame. In just eight days, our 47th president has enacted numerous executive orders that have thrown the American government into chaos. I could start by mentioning the 17 Inspector Generals, who are “watchdogs” to ensure government officials are acting ethically and morally, that were fired Friday night. I could mention the chaos and confusion in the US Army as they are trying to figure out how to sort out the executive orders requiring them to no longer support Equal Opportunity programs. Or I could mention how the proposed freeze on Federal funding will affect millions of non-profits who help anything from cancer research to support for victims of domestic violence. Or if none of these horrific acts bother you, maybe going after your money will make you realize how wasteful this administration has already become. For an administration that stands on their podium and claims they will eliminate unnecessary government spending, with his mass deportation program, our current president is dishing out hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars with each flight back of immigrants back to their home country. In my former life, when I worked for an for-profit grocery chain, I will never forget the argument against a pro-Republican district manager about the government’s role in helping people. Their view was that the American government should not have any social “hand-out” programs that take the “hard-earned” money from taxpayers and hands them out to those in America that need social programs just to survive. This manager’s belief was that non-profits, such as churches and local organizations should be the source for any of these programs. Which is fine, if we did not claim to be a “Christian” nation. However, if we do want to be the “Christian” nation we claim to be, we should be appalled at the current administrations actions to gut programs that walk the walk of Christ. WorldRelief.org (a four-star relief organization) has needed to implement a new campaign to “Stand in the Gap“, urging churches and individuals to step up to the plate and fill the financial gap they are now facing due to the sudden loss of Federal funding support.

Instead of really diving into any of the above, I do want to point out that the “Doomsday Clock” has been moved to “89 Seconds to Midnight“. The group of Atomic Scientists who control the Doomsday Clock released the annual update yesterday to say that the world is the closest it has ever been to humanity wiping itself out. This is due to climate change, the threat of nuclear war, the increase of pandemics, instability in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and the development of Artificial Intelligence that is being implemented in military weaponry. These scientists do continue to point out that we control the clock, and we could take action that would move us back from the brink of extinction. But we will not. Instead, we like to promote hatred and division, exactly as Jesus commanded us to do. Pack your bags and prepare to leave, the siege is about to begin.
