Common Sense REBORN Devotion

Song of Moses

15“But Israel soon became fat and unruly;

the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed!

Then they abandoned the God who had made them;

they made light of the Rock of their salvation.” (Deuteronomy 32:15)

Good morning family! It has been over two weeks since my last post. I have jumped back into working a crazy schedule, working as much overtime as possible due to the Savannah Police Department still sitting at a dangerously low staffing level. Before I deployed, I had been working a lot of “Off-duty” jobs, gigs where different businesses pay for a police officer to be on site for extra security. Those jobs are easy, but usually pretty boring. I have decided that if I am going to pull myself away from my family and work extra shifts (I do this to help our financial position), I am going to do so by working extra shifts on patrol, where I am at least making a difference out in the streets of Savannah. During my hiatus from this platform, the city of Savannah hosted their annual Fourth of July Festival, which landed on my off day, so I volunteered to work the festival, which is always a good time. This year, there were no issues. Savannah had a decent sized crowd, and our only problems arose late in the night, as a few fights broke out at the bars that stay open to the early morning hours. This last week also included my return to SPD’s Under Water Search and Recovery Team and marked my first offshore (and first deep water) dive. I will try to put a post together next week to recount that amazing experience.

But, of course, today, I want to talk about the biggest news story gripping our nation right now. The assassination attempt on Donald Trump, should not be a shock to anyone. It is ironic, that the most divisive President in our nation’s history, would almost be killed by a member of his own political party. Trump has spent his whole time in the political arena spewing hate and lies, and now everyone is shocked that someone would attempt to silence his hateful rhetoric. If you did not do your due diligence as an American citizen to fact-check Trump and President Biden’s first debate, you may not have seen how nearly every word out of Trump’s mouth was a lie. You can read that by clicking here.

We seem to forget how divided our nation was during the four years of Trump’s reign. We seem to forget how white supremacists, neo nazis, racists, and every other scum emerged from the shadows and rallied around “their president”. We seem to forget how Trump’s loyalists stormed the nation’s capital in the greatest threat to democracy since the Civil War.

Where America goes from this moment forward is anyone’s guess. But knowing the despicable rhetoric that comes out of the attended target of yesterday’s assassination attempt, the future does not look good. As Moses pointed out to the Israelites, who were poised to enter the land God had promised them, America has become “fat and unruly”. We have “abandoned the God who created” us and instead worship political idols, wealth, weapons, and social media. If you need a reminder, Jesus supported no political party, He supported helping the lowest and lost, loving everyone, healing the sick, blind, lame; lifting up the poor; caring for the orphan and widow; and only spoke against the religious elite that failed to do the forementioned, yet claimed to be the saviors of humanity. Vote for candidates whose ideals fall closest to what Jesus held as important. If we, as a nation do that, then perhaps we can return to finding favor with God.

In these dark times, music remains a way to bring calm and hope in this storm, and the great ones have done it again. Elevation Worship has released their new album, and they continue to elevate their game every single time. Click here to listen to the entire 14-song-set.
