Spy Wednesday
3Then satan entered into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve disciples, and he went to the leading priests and captains of the Temple guard to discuss the best way to betray Jesus. (Luke 22:3)
Welcome to the mid-point of Holy Week. As we started on Sunday with “Palm Sunday”, followed by table-flipping Monday, and Teaching Tuesday, today is what is traditionally referred to as “Spy Wednesday”. I like Luke’s verses on this subject, as it describes the true culprit behind Judas’ betrayal: the dark Prince, Lucifer. Satan came into Judas and convinced him to betray the Prince of Peace for thirty pieces of silver. A decision that eventually filled Judas with so much guilt that he hung himself as Jesus was set to face a corrupt trail (Matthew 27:5). But “Spy Wednesday” is not just a focus on the betrayal of the spy Judas, but also a moment of love and adoration toward Jesus.
Wednesday night is the moment in the story of Jesus’ last week when He went to dine at Mary and Martha’s home, eating with their brother, Lazarus, who Jesus recently resurrected from the grave. Only the Apostle John lists Mary as the woman who anoints Jesus with “expensive perfume made from the essence of nard”(John 12:3). It is this act that infuriates Judas, as he claims that the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. But John reveals the true character of Judas as he writes: “Not that he cared for the poor-he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself”(John 12:6).
“Spy Wednesday” is a day to reflect on the evil spirits in the world. A powerful reminder that the devil is constantly seeking to undermine all that Jesus stands for, and all the good God performs. Guard your heart against these evil spies and do not fall victim of allowing the love of money and this world to betray the one who loves you the most. To read all that happened on this day of Holy Week, reference Matthew 26:6-16; Mark 14:1-11; Luke 22:1-6; and John 12:1-6.
