Teaching Tuesday

37“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me. 38And now, look, your house is abandoned and desolate. 39For I tell you this, you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 23:37-39)

It’s Tuesday in our study of Holy Week. Kicking off with Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Jesus returned to Jerusalem on Monday and flipped the tables of the merchants in the Temple. On Tuesday, He returned to the Temple and taught all day. Matthew, Mark, and Luke each captured the extensive lessons Jesus shared with the religious leaders and anyone who had ears to hear. Jesus used many parables including “The Parable of the Two Sons” (Matthew 21:28-32); “The Parable of the Evil Farmers” (Matthew 21:33-46, Mark 12:1-12, Luke 20:9-19); and “The Parable of the Wedding Dinner” (Matthew 22:1-15). The religious leaders attempted to back Jesus in a corner by asking Him about paying taxes (Matthew 22:15-22, Mark 12:13-17, Luke 20:20-26). They questioned Jesus about the Resurrection (Matthew 22:23-33, Mark 12:18-27, Luke 20:27-40). And one religious leader asked Jesus what the Greatest Commandment is (Matthew 22:34-45, Mark 12:28-34).

The Gospel of Matthew captures the enormous amount of teaching and preaching Jesus did on that special Tuesday. Beginning in Matthew 21:18 and spreading all the way to Matthew 26:5. I recommend spending time today rereading all the amazing words spoken by Jesus during this special time. Jesus poured His heart out to the people of Jerusalem, the city He loved like no other.

Jesus knew His time of ministry was quickly drawing to a close, so He did not waste a single moment to share His wisdom with as many as He could.

If you knew your life were to be coming to an end in just a few days, what would you want to teach the world around you? Spend some time thinking about that. Make a list of the most important wisdom you have to share. And then get out and bless anyone willing to listen!
