Countdown to Christmas

4And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child. (Luke 2:4-5)

Good morning Family! The countdown to Christmas is here! We are just three short days away from celebrating the birth of our King! Over these next few mornings, I will be sharing the story of Christmas with you from Luke Chapter Two, the source material for all those manger scenes and magical imagery.

We start that journey with Joseph, a descendant of King David, leading a very pregnant Mary to Bethlehem on their donkey. This fulfilled two key Old Testament prophecies: God would place a descendant of David to rule over Israel for all generations (2 Chronicles 13:5) and that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). The trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem would have taken somewhere between four-to-seven days, meaning Joseph and Mary probably were having to sleep in random places every night, making the warm spot in the manger all the more inviting. The Savior of all mankind was on the way to make a humble entry into a broken world.

I usually do a countdown of my favorite new/old Christmas songs, but Tommee Profitt’s epic live concert has still dominated my time listening to music lately, so this year, for the next four days, I will be sharing my favorite songs off that album, starting with the one currently playing in my ear: “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear”.
